Our Women in Tech Day: Highlights and Lessons

At Tech Empowerment Hub, we believe that technology is a powerful tool for empowerment, creativity, and change. However, women remain underrepresented in tech globally, including in Africa. Bridging this gap is not just about access to devices or training; it is about fostering confidence, creating opportunities, and nurturing a supportive ecosystem where women can thrive.

This year, our Women in Tech Day was a resounding success—a celebration of innovation, learning, and empowerment. In this post, we share the highlights of the event, the lessons learned, and why initiatives like this are critical for building a more inclusive tech community in Cameroon and across Africa.

1. A Day to Celebrate Women in Technology

Women in Tech Day was designed as both a learning experience and a platform for inspiration. The event brought together young women, students, tech enthusiasts, mentors, and professionals from diverse backgrounds. The goal was clear: to showcase that women not only belong in technology but can lead, innovate, and create meaningful change through tech.

The day featured:

  • Hands-on workshops and coding sessions

  • Panel discussions with women leaders in tech

  • Mentorship opportunities and networking sessions

  • Showcases of projects developed by young women

The atmosphere was vibrant and empowering. Participants walked in curious, hesitant, or unsure, but they left confident, motivated, and equipped with practical skills.

2. Hands-On Workshops: Learning by Doing

One of the key highlights of the day was the interactive workshops. We focused on areas that are accessible yet impactful for beginners, including:

  • Introduction to Coding: Using platforms like Scratch and Python, participants created simple apps and games, learning the basics of programming logic and problem-solving.

  • AI Fundamentals: Participants explored AI concepts such as chatbots, image recognition, and predictive models. They learned how AI can be applied in daily life and local industries.

  • Digital Entrepreneurship: Workshops on turning tech skills into opportunities showed young women how to develop digital products, create online businesses, and leverage social media for marketing.

  • Cybersecurity and Online Safety: Understanding the risks of the digital world is critical. Participants learned best practices for data protection, privacy, and safe online behavior.

These workshops were hands-on, allowing participants to learn by doing, ask questions, and experiment with technology in a supportive environment. Many attendees shared that this practical approach helped them feel more confident in exploring tech independently.

3. Inspiring Talks from Women Leaders

Another memorable aspect of Women in Tech Day was the panel of speakers—women who are leaders, innovators, and changemakers in the tech ecosystem. They shared personal journeys, challenges faced, and strategies for success.

Key lessons from the speakers included:

  • Persistence and Resilience: Many highlighted the importance of not giving up when facing barriers or societal stereotypes.

  • Lifelong Learning: Technology evolves rapidly. Staying curious, learning continuously, and embracing new tools are essential.

  • Community and Mentorship: Seeking mentors and supporting peers is crucial. Women are stronger when they lift each other up.

  • Innovation with Purpose: Tech skills are powerful, but applying them to solve real-world problems—like healthcare, agriculture, or education—can amplify impact.

Participants were particularly inspired by stories of women who overcame societal expectations and limited resources to become tech entrepreneurs, software developers, and AI practitioners. These stories provided both motivation and practical guidance for young women considering a future in technology.

4. Networking and Mentorship Opportunities

Women in Tech Day was not just about learning; it was also about connection. Networking sessions allowed participants to meet peers, mentors, and potential collaborators. Many attendees exchanged contact information, discussed project ideas, and explored future opportunities for collaboration.

Mentorship played a central role. Experienced women in tech offered guidance on career paths, coding challenges, scholarships, and internship opportunities. For many young women, this was their first chance to receive personalized mentorship in a supportive and encouraging setting.

5. Showcasing Innovation and Talent

One of the most exciting moments of the day was the project showcase. Participants demonstrated small apps, websites, and digital tools they had been working on—some for the first time. Highlights included:

  • A simple health tracking app for rural communities

  • A crop management tool to help local farmers monitor growth and weather patterns

  • Interactive educational games designed for younger students to learn coding and math

The showcase gave participants a sense of accomplishment and reinforced the message that women can be creators, innovators, and problem-solvers in technology. It also gave mentors and visitors a firsthand look at the potential of young women in tech when given access to resources and support.

6. Lessons Learned from the Event

While the day was a huge success, it also provided valuable insights into what works—and what more is needed—to support women in tech:

  1. Early Exposure Matters: Many participants shared that they had never been formally introduced to coding or AI. Early exposure to technology sparks curiosity and confidence.

  2. Mentorship is Key: Ongoing mentorship, not just one-off events, is essential for skill development and career guidance.

  3. Inclusive Learning Environments: Safe, supportive spaces encourage young women to experiment, ask questions, and overcome self-doubt.

  4. Practical Skills Make a Difference: Hands-on workshops with tangible outcomes are more effective than theoretical sessions alone.

  5. Community Support Amplifies Impact: Engaging local schools, universities, and organizations ensures broader participation and long-term impact.

These lessons guide Tech Empowerment Hub in designing future programs and initiatives, ensuring that more women gain meaningful access to technology and opportunities.

7. Looking Ahead: Continuing the Momentum

Women in Tech Day is not an isolated event; it is part of a larger commitment to bridging the gender gap in technology. Following the event, Tech Empowerment Hub plans to:

  • Launch mentorship programs pairing participants with experienced women in tech

  • Offer ongoing coding clubs and AI workshops for female students

  • Create scholarships and support programs to enable women to pursue tech education

  • Partner with local organizations and tech companies to expand access to resources and internships

By sustaining these initiatives, we aim to build a pipeline of skilled, confident, and empowered women ready to shape the future of technology in Cameroon and Africa.

8. Conclusion

Our Women in Tech Day was more than just an event—it was a celebration of talent, curiosity, and potential. It demonstrated that with access, mentorship, and opportunity, young women can thrive in technology, create innovative solutions, and inspire others to follow their path.

The lessons from this day are clear: technology should not be gendered, and empowerment comes through education, support, and encouragement. Tech Empowerment Hub remains committed to fostering an environment where African girls and women can learn, grow, and lead in tech.

By continuing to invest in initiatives like Women in Tech Day, we are not only closing the gender gap but also building a stronger, more innovative, and digitally inclusive Africa. The journey has just begun, and the future is bright for the next generation of women in technology.
